Its All About The Eyes
In these times when wearing a mask is the norm, more and more clients are coming to us with concerns about their eyes as this is the only area of the face people get to see.
How many of you already incorporate targeted eye products into your morning and evening skin routine? Even though you may be religiously cleansing and applying serums and moisturisers, due to the delicate nature, the eye contours require their own dose of special attention.
The skin around the eyes is considerably thinner than other parts of the body, which is why it's particularly susceptible to damage. As a result, it's often the first part of our complexion to give away secrets.
The depletion of natural collagen levels over time means signs of ageing will often appear more pronounced in this delicate area. Exposure to UV rays increases the breakdown of elastin and collagen as well as the natural ageing process. Age also plays a part in fatty deposits around the eye area which gives them a puffy appearance.
Crows feet/fine lines around the eyes can be a result of cumulative sun damage, muscle contraction and the general thinning of the skin that comes with age. The skin around the eye can become dry and flaky in cold weather when it's exposed to wind, dry climates and indoor heating that pull moisture from the air. Puffiness under the eyes can be caused by several issues, including tiredness, fluid retention, allergies and genetics.
Daily facial expressions and movements can also take their toll. The skin around the eyes is the most delicate. approximately 10 times thinner that the skin on the rest of the face. Combine this with the fact that the area is subjected to the constant strain generated by our body's fastest, most frequently-used muscles. From smiling, frowning and squinting at our screens, we make over 100,000 eye movements per day, many of which happen in less that 1/100th of a second - literally quicker than a blink of the eye. It's no surprise then that the eye area is one of the first places for ageing to appear.
Your current lifestyle factors, such as fatigue or even stress can play their part in exacerbating issues too. For example, dark circles under the eyes are a common concern which can affect many regardless of age. As the skin around the eyes is thin, the fragile blood vessels underneath can become more apparent. A secondary cause of darkening around the eyes can be hyperpigmentation which is caused by an increase in melanin production in this area. This can be due to hormones, medication or UV exposure.
